Choosing an Outdoor Garden Hammock

garden-hammockThere are many different types of outdoor garden hammocks to buy and also many parts and accessories. To make sure you buy the very best hammock for your needs as far as size, intended use, comfort and the construction material are concerned you will need to do some research and planning. For outdoor use you need to be careful that the hammock you buy will be made of the right materials to last when left outside for any length of time.

Hammock Length

While the bed length of hammocks is fairly standard widths vary considerably. Bed length refers to the length of the actual hammock material and is not the overall length. You will need to find out the space available in the position you intend to hang the hammock to be sure to buy the correct size. Overall length of most hammocks, including the ropes and/or stand is around 13 feet so take this into account when planning where you will hang the hammock.

Hammock Weight Capacity

You also need to take account of the weight of the people who will be using the hammock. A standard maximum capacity is around 450 pounds, plenty for most people. Some larger hammocks even go up to about 600 pounds. For double hammocks to accommodate two people especially take note of the maximum weight capacity.

Hammock Materials

Hammocks are made in a two main materials. Fabrics include cotton, polyester or canvas, and ropes may be cotton or polyester. One of the most luxurious and comfortable is a quilted hammock which is usually made from cotton or cotton/polyester mix. For sleeping, most people recommend a material hammock as it will be more comfortable than the classic rope hammock. Classic rope hammocks have been in use for many, many thousands of years and are probably what most people think of when they hear the word ‘hammock’. Rope hammocks are definitely not as comfortable as material hammocks and require some extra padding if you want to use them for any length of time! If the hammock will be kept outside for long periods you should choose a polyester material or rope to stand up to the elements better. Although cotton is more comfortable it will not last as long if left outside for any length of time.

Hammock types

Hammocks come in a wide variety of types including chair hammocks, portable hammocks, rope hammocks, baby hammocks, camping hammocks and swing hammocks. Make sure before you buy just which type you need by doing some research first.
